She Kept the Porch Light on for a Man Who Wasn’t Coming Back

She kept the porch light on every night for eleven years.

Moths circled it like they had nowhere better to be. Neighbors stopped asking why around year three.

Her husband left on a Tuesday morning, said he was driving to Memphis for parts. He never turned up, but the truck did. Outside Tupelo. Empty tank. Doors locked.

She didn’t change the locks. Didn't sell the truck. Didn't take his coat off the hook by the door.

Folks in town had theories. Some said another woman. Some said the river. Nobody said it to her face.

When my mother finally asked her—straight out, the way only a sister can—she just looked at the porch light and said:

“It’s not for him. It’s so I’ll know if I stop waiting.”
